June Update, Zoom Classes

Posted by magwoodma on June 3, 2020 at 11:50 PM

Hi Magwood’s Martial Arts Family,

Wow it’s June already. Schools have been closed since mid March. We have been unable to train in person for more than 10 weeks. I am so sad to not be able to work with everyone in person during the pandemic. I have missed you all so much. May and June are the time of the year that we normally have our annual open house martial arts demonstrations our belt gradings and presentation. I am disappointed that I will not be able to congratulate all the hard work that my students put in to training this season. We will get through these tough times and be training and grading again soon.

I really want to thank those students who have continued to support the club financially during this time. Your generosity is what has kept me working on the live feeds and now the move to Zoom.

During the past 10 weeks I have been working hard to provide online training content using Facebook Live Feed Classes. It has been a steep learning curve and I am happy with the results so far. Lots of people have been enjoying the Live Feeds and there have been 8 live classes a week that were then posted on our Facebook page and can be viewed at any time. If you haven’t had a chance to check them out please do. All full catalogue of classes are on the Magwood’s Martial Arts Page for you to enjoy. Chi Kung, Tai Chi and Internal Martial Arts, Kung Fu and Jiu Jitsu and Karate classes.

My old laptop can’t keep up with online broadcasting so I am in the process of updating my laptop so we can continue to train online together. I have decided to move away from the Facebook Live format to a Zoom based platform. Zoom will offer a much more feedback rich online training experience than the Facebook Live format.

There will be no classes on the first week of June as I get all the parts assembled for the zoom classes. I will be launching the Zoom classes on the second week of June. I am working on a schedule for group classes as well as working on creating time slots for smaller study groups, semiprivate and private lessons. For those nervous about using Zoom I will be creating a how to document for the zoom lessons to help everyone make the transition. Please start by downloading the zoom app for your computer or device.

I have lots of ideas for distance learning. What do you want to see in the online format? Please let me know what you would like to see from the classes. I have been doing mostly morning classes. Is there a group that would like some evening zoom sessions?

The feedback I have gotten on the Live Feed Classes is that one of the most beneficial aspects of the online lesson format is the ability to go back and review lessons. I am looking into ways to continue to video host all the zoom classes so those who participate can go back and review the lessons when ever they would like. If anyone knows of a good private video hosting option please share that information with me.

I have been offering the Live Feed Classes publicly for the last 10 weeks and lots of people have been accessing the lessons but this is not a sustainable model. I am working on a pay schedule for the Zoom based classes and will have more information soon.

I hope you are all healthy and taking good care of the people you are weathering out the storm with. I will be in contact soon with more information on the switch to Zoom. In the meantime please feel free to contact me with any ideas you have for the online learning sessions. Children’s specific classes? Self-defence classes? Weapon study groups? Kata classes? Forms classes? Cardio and fitness classes?

Hope to hear from you and I will be in touch with more info very soon.
